Analyzing the Limitations of the Rider and Electric Motorcycle at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Race

This paper describes a post-race analysis of team KOMMIT EVT’s electric motorcycle data collected during the 2016 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC). The motorcycle consumed approximately 4 kWh of battery energy with an average and maximum speed of 107 km/h and 149 km/h, respectively. It was the second fastest electric motorcycle with a finishing time of 11:10.480. Data was logged of the motorcycle’s speed, acceleration, motor speed, power, currents, voltages, temperatures, throttle position, GPS position, rider’s heart rate and the ambient environment (air temperature, pressure and humidity). The data was used to understand the following factors that may have prevented a faster time: physical fitness of the rider, thermal limits of the motor and controller, available battery energy and the sprocket ratio between the motor and rear wheel.

Experiments and Analyses on Stability/Mid-Channel Collapse of Ash-Deposit Wall Layers and Pre-Mature Clogging of Diesel Particulate Filters

The conventional concept of soot and ash wall deposits (i.e. cake-layers) gradually building up along the channels of a ceramic honeycomb and then periodically or continuously being swept downstream toward the end-plugs of the channels may not always occur in practice. When deposits irregularly form on or detach from the walls, causing premature clogging usually around the mid-sections of the channels (also known as Mid-Channel Collapse), and the particulate filter is prone to experiencing significantly elevated back pressure, resulting in the need for earlier repair or replacement than desired. Here we describe related experiments that were performed, accompanied by analysis and simulation, in order to investigate the factors that contribute to the patterns of wall deposits that form-particularly of ash-and the effects of these irregular patterns.

Development of a SIL, HIL and Vehicle Test-Bench for Model-Based Design and Validation of Hybrid Powertrain Control Strategies

Hybrid powertrains with multiple sources of power have generated new control challenges in the automotive industry. Purdue University's participation in EcoCAR 2, an Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition managed by the Argonne National Laboratories and sponsored by GM and DOE, has provided an exciting opportunity to create a comprehensive test-bench for the development and validation of advanced hybrid powertrain control strategies. As one of 15 competing university teams, the Purdue EcoMakers are re-engineering a donated 2013 Chevrolet Malibu into a plug-in parallel- through-the-road hybrid-electric vehicle, to reduce its environmental impact without compromising performance, safety or consumer acceptability. This paper describes the Purdue team's control development process for the EcoCAR 2 competition.

Modeling of the Rotary Engine Apex Seal Lubrication

The Wankel rotary engine is more compact than conventional piston engines, but its oil and fuel consumption must be reduced to satisfy emission standards and customer expectations. A key step toward this goal is to develop a better understanding of the apex seal lubrication to reduce oil injection while reducing friction and maintaining adequate wear. This paper presents an apex seal dynamics model capable of estimating relative wear and predicting friction, by modeling the gas and oil flows at the seal interfaces with the rotor housing and groove flanks. Model predictions show that a thin oil film can reduce wear and friction, but to a limited extent as the apex seal running face profile is sharp due to the engine kinematics.

Numerical Simulation on Soot Formation in Diesel Combustion by Using a CFD Code Combined with a Parallelized Explicit ODE Solver

The objective of the present study is to analyze soot formation in diesel engine combustion by using multi-dimensional combustion simulations with a parallelized explicit ODE solver. Parallelized CHEMEQ2 was used to perform detailed chemical kinetics in KIVA-4 code. CHEMEQ2 is an explicit stiff ODE solver developed by Mott et al. which is known to be faster than traditional implicit ODE solvers, e.g., DVODE. In the present study, about eight times faster computation was achieved with CHEMEQ2 compared to DVODE when using a single thread. Further, by parallelizing CHEMEQ2 using OpenMP, the simulations could be run not only on calculation servers but also on desktop machines. The computation time decreases with the number of threads used. The parallelized CHEMEQ2 enabled combustion and emission characteristics, including detailed soot formation processes, to be predicted using KIVA-4 code with detailed chemical kinetics without the need for reducing the reaction mechanism.

Optimizing Base Oil Viscosity Temperature Dependence For Power Cylinder Friction Reduction

Lubricant viscosity along the engine cylinder liner varies by an order of magnitude due to local temperature variation and vaporization effects. Tremendous potential exists for fuel economy improvement by optimizing local viscosity variations for specific operating conditions. Methods for analytical estimation of friction and wear in the power-cylinder system are reviewed and used to quantify opportunities for improving mechanical efficiency and fuel economy through lubricant formulation tailored specifically to liner temperature distributions. Temperature dependent variations in kinematic viscosity, density, shear thinning, and lubricant composition are investigated. Models incorporating the modified Reynolds equation were used to estimate friction and wear under the top ring and piston skirt of a typical 11.0 liter diesel engine.

1 Downsizing and turbocharging a spark-ignited engine is becoming an important strategy in the engine industry for improving the efficiency of gasoline engines. Through boosting the air flow, the torque is increased, the engine can thus be downsized, engine friction is reduced in both absolute and relative terms, and engine efficiency is increased. However knock onset with a given octane rating fuel limits both compression ratio and boost levels. This paper explores the operating limits of a turbocharged engine, with various gasoline-ethanol blends, and the interaction between compression ratio, boost levels, and spark retard, to achieve significant increases in maximum engine mean effective pressure and efficiency.

Modeling the Three Piece Oil Control Ring Dynamics and Oil Transport in Internal Combustion Engines

Three-piece oil control rings (TPOCR) are widely used in the majority of modern gasoline engines and they are critical for lubricant regulation and friction reduction. Despite their omnipresence, the TPOCRs’ motion and sealing mechanisms are not well studied. With stricter emission standards, gasoline engines are required to maintain lower oil consumption limits, since particulate emissions are strongly correlated with lubricant oil emissions. This piqued our interest in building a numerical model coupling TPOCR dynamics and oil transport to explain the physical mechanisms. In this work, a 2D dynamics model of all three pieces of the ring is built as the main frame. Oil transport in different zones are coupled into the dynamics model. Specifically, two mass-conserved fluid sub-models predict the oil movement between rail liner interface and rail groove clearance to capture the potential oil leakage through TPOCR. The model is applied on a 2D laser induced fluorescence (2D-LIF) engine.

An Adaptive Air/Fuel Ratio Controller for SI Engine Throttle Transients

An adaptive air/fuel ratio controller for SI engine throttle transient was developed. The scheme is based on an event- based, single- parameter fuel dynamics model. A least- square- error algorithm with an active forgetting factor was used for parameter identifications. A one- step- look- ahead controller was designed to maintain the desired air/fuel ratio by canceling the fuel dynamics with the controller setting updated adaptively according to the identified parameters. When implemented on a Ford Ztech engine and tested under a set of throttle- transient operations, the adaptive controller learned quickly and performed well.

The increasing demand for environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient transportation and power generation requires further optimization and minimization of friction power losses. With up to 50% of the overall friction, the piston cylinder unit (PCU) shows most potential within the internal combustion engine (ICE) to increase mechanical efficiency. Calculating friction of internal combustion engines, especially the friction contribution from piston rings and skirt, requires detailed knowledge of the dynamics and lubrication regime of the components being in contact. Part I of this research presents a successful match of simulated and measured piston inter-ring pressures at numerous operation points [1] and constitutes the starting point for the comparison of simulated and measured piston group friction forces as presented in this research.

Research on Reduction of Piston Vibration by Providing Granular Dampers Inside the Lattice Structure

A high compression ratio is an effective means for improving the thermal efficiency of an internal combustion engines. However, a high compression ratio leads to a rapid rise in the combustion pressure, as it causes a high impulse force. The impulse force generates vibrations and noise by spreading in the engine. Therefore, reducing the vibration of the combustion (which increases as the compression ratio increases) can improve the thermal efficiency while using the same technology. We are conducting model-based research on technologies for reducing combustion vibration by applying a granular damper to a piston. To efficiently reduce the vibration, we suppress it directly with the piston, i.e., the source of the vibration. Thus, the damping effect is maximized within a minimized countermeasure range.

Vehicle Front Structure in Consideration of Compatibility

A structure which effectively improves compatibility in a vehicle-to-vehicle frontal impact has been considered focusing on sub-frame structure that disperses applied force with multiple load paths. Evolved sub-frame structure has been studied by CAE with RADIOSS to search the possibility to reduce aggressivity and to improve self-protection at the same time. Vehicle models used for this compatibility study were a large saloon car with sub-frame and a small family car without sub-frame. The large saloon car had three different front structures: original, forward-extended sub-frame, and original with 25%-stiffness reduced structures. The types of collision contained four different crash modes in a combination of lateral overlap rate difference and side member height difference.

A Study of Jump and Bounce in a Valve Train

Valve train motion was investigated with computer simulation technique. The application of a 5-mass model was found to accurately predict the valve train behavior. It was identified that valve train stiffness and close-side characteristics of valve lift curve have significant effects on bounce occurrence. A valve train with high stiffness tends to develop bounce after jump, while on one with low stiffness, bounce starts in the absence of jump. These findings allowed to develop a new cam form with use of harmonic curves for elevating the revolution limit of the valve train.

Modeling of Oil Transport between Piston Skirt and Cylinder Liner in Internal Combustion Engines

The distribution of lubricating oil plays a critical role in determining the friction between piston skirt and cylinder liner, which is one of the major contributors to the total friction loss in internal combustion engines. In this work, based upon the experimental observation an existing model for the piston secondary motion and skirt lubrication was improved with a physics-based model describing the oil film separation from full film to partial film. Then the model was applied to a modern turbo-charged SI engine. The piston-skirt FMEP predicted by the model decreased with larger installation clearance, which was also observed from the measurements using IMEP method at the rated. It was found that the main period of the cycle exhibiting friction reduction is in the expansion stroke when the skirt only contacts the thrust side for all tested installation clearances.

Effect of Wet Liner Vibration on Ring-liner Interaction in Heavy-duty Engines

Lubricating oil consumption (LOC) is a direct source of hydrocarbon and particulate emissions from internal combustion engines. LOC also inhibits the lifetime of exhaust aftertreatment system components, preventing their ability to effectively filter out other harmful emissions. Due to its influence on piston ring- bore conformability, bore distortion is arguably the most critical parameter for engine designers to consider in prevention of LOC. Bore distortion also has a significant influence on the contact forces between the piston ring and cylinder wall, which determine the wear rate of the ring and cylinder wall and can cause durability issues. Two drivers of bore distortion: thermal expansion and head bolt stresses, are routinely considered in conformability and contact analyses. Separately, bore distortion/vibration due to piston impact and combustion/cylinder pressures has been previously analyzed in wet liner engines for coolant cavitation and noise considerations.

Modeling of piston pin rotation in a large bore gas engine

In an engine system, the piston pin is subjected to high loading and severe lubrication conditions, and pin seizures still occur during new engine development. A better understanding of the lubricating oil behavior and the dynamics of the piston pin could lead to cost- effective solutions to mitigate these problems. However, research in this area is still limited due to the complexity of the lubrication and the pin dynamics. In this work, a numerical model that considers structure deformation and oil cavitation was developed to investigate the lubrication and dynamics of the piston pin. The model combines multi-body dynamics and elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication. A routine was established for generating and processing compliance matrices and further optimized to reduce computation time and improve the convergence of the equations. A simple built-in wear model was used to modify the pin bore and small end profiles based on the asperity contact pressures.

Optimization of the IC Engine Piston Skirt Design Via Neural Network Surrogate and Genetic Algorithms

Internal combustion (IC) engines still power most of the vehicles on road and will likely to remain so in the near future, especially for heavy duty applications in which electrification is typically more challenging. Therefore, continued improvements on IC engines in terms of efficiency and longevity are necessary for a more sustainable transportation sector. Two important design objectives for heavy duty engines with wet liners are to reduce friction loss and to lower the risks of cavitation damages, both of which can be greatly influenced by the piston-liner clearance and the design of the piston skirt. However, engine design optimization is difficult due to the nonlinear interactions between the key design variables and the design objectives, as well as the multi-physics and multi-scale nature of the mechanisms that are relevant to the design objectives.
